Braces for Adults

Braces for Adults

Today, there is an increasing number of adults who opt to wear braces to correct malocclusions and straighten their teeth. The performance of orthodontic braces has improved vastly reducing the physical pressure on the teeth and requires shorter treatment durations. This mean a patient has more options and flexibility in their appliances resulting in a pleasant and satisfying treatment experience.

As per the estimate, one-third of the adult population are orthodontic patients. As the jaw growth is adults is fully complete and may be affected a little more when compared to pre-teens and teenagers, their treatment gets extended for a long period. Otherwise, an adult can experience equally beautiful results as a teenager.

Benefits of Using Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontic braces straighten and realign crooked, misaligned teeth which enhance the physical appearance and boost self-confidence. They also help chew, bite and speak clearly. Further, orthodontic braces play a vital role in reducing decay, decrease the chances of tooth injury, digestive orders and developing periodontal diseases. Orthodontists believe that straight teeth tend to be healthier teeth.

A variety of braces are currently available that have been adapted and modified to make them more convenient for the adults. The patient’s malocclusion is classified to select the best possible braces for a smoother treatment.

Procedure

During the first appointment with Dr. Joseph Cheng, patient’s teeth are treated if there any existing dental conditions such as gum diseases, tooth decay or plaque. If the dental issues are not treated before the braces are affixed, the patient’s condition will worsen. The most common types of malocclusions are:

  • Under bite: the lower teeth protrude further than the upper teeth
  • Over bite: the upper teeth protrude further than the lower teeth
  • Overcrowding: insufficient space on the arches to favor the full complement of the adult teeth

Types for Orthodontic Braces

The following are a few among the most popular orthodontic braces:

A) Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are strong and mostly do not stain. The individual brackets that come with the braces are cemented to each individual tooth and an archwire that puts gentle pressure on the teeth. Braces are made of metal, ceramic or clear synthetic material. As ceramic brackets are tooth-colored, they tend to get discolored by smoking, coffee, wine, and certain foods but they are more comfortable than the metal brackets.

B)  Invisalign

Invisalign aligners are the most favorite among the adults they can be removed and are invisible. Invisalign aligners are clear trays that should be worn for a recommended amount of time every day. These aligners are very comfortable, less obtrusive and give the quickest results. But Invisalign aligners are a tad expensive and may not suit all the patients.

C)  Lingual Braces

These braces are usually made of metal and fixed on the tongue side of the teeth which makes them invisible when the patient smiles. They are moderately expensive and may interfere with a patient’s normal speech.
